What You Should Know About Air Purifiers

Sore throat, coughing, sneezing, sinus headaches and runny noses are just some of the miserable symptoms we allergy, asthma and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) sufferers deal with every day. Indoor or outdoor, it doesn't really matter. Medications help some, but there is no cure for this often debilitating problem. At least if you have outdoor allergies you can avoid going outside when pollen is most prevalent. But, if you have indoor allergies you are mostly out of luck. You live in your house, for goodness sake. What can you do? Live in a bubble? Personally, I wouldn't mind having a personal bubble, but that is impractical. What's the next best thing; Two words, air purifiers. They won't cure you, but they will make your life more comfortable.

There are several basic technologies that are known to be effective in providing real improvement to office and home indoor quality. These are HEPA and electrostatic (not ozone or ionic) air purifiers that typically also use activated carbon and sometimes UV purification.>/p>

Air purifiers are used to clean harmful allergens and toxins out of the air. Research has shown that on average, the air inside a home is dirtier than the air outdoors. This makes having a good air purifier a necessity for any family who wants to breathe clean, healthy air. People suffering from allergies will often find that the use of an air purifier reduces their symptoms significantly. There are many different types of purifiers on the market today from which you can choose. Let's take a look at some of the choices available to you:

HEPA Air Purifiers: HEPA is an acronym that stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. These types of purifiers use HEPA filters to clean out the air. HEPA filter technology is among the best technology available for air cleaners. It is a very effective system but the filters must be changed to remain effective. For a filter or purifier to be classified as a HEPA it must meet stringent guidelines -- 99.97 percent of particle matter measuring 0.3 microns in size must be captured. To get an idea of the size we are talking about, 0.3 microns is a few hundred times smaller than a human hair and a particle of that size cannot even be seen by the human eye!

Ionic Air Purifiers: Ionic or electrostatic purifiers are a fairly recent addition on the market. They work by using negative ions to charge the particles in the air. These charged particles then fall from the air and land on surfaces where they can be dusted away. Because the particles can be often be released back into the air, most ionic air purifiers use electrostatic technology to trap the particles. Electrostatic or electronic systems clean with charged plates and save the cost of replacement filters but require that the plates be washed.

Both of these main technologies remove particles but not chemicals or odors. To address this need, room air purifiers must also have some form of activated carbon from as little as a thin mat to as much as 15 pounds.

UV Air Purifiers: Ultraviolet light is also sometimes employed with a HEPA filter to eliminate microorganisms. UV air purifiers, as their name suggests, use ultraviolet technology to destroy harmful bacteria, mold and even certain types of viruses. If you want the most technologically advanced air purifier available a UV air purifier may be your best bet.

When searching for an air purifier compare different products to learn which one is best for your home. Make sure you match the area that needs clean air with the ratings of the air purifiers you are considering. Depending on the size of your home and the type of purifier you choose you may need more than one (or consider a centralized system). Using a good purifier can make all the difference in the quality of air that you breathe daily, so be sure to choose the very best model that you can afford. Your health just may depend on it!
